• Involving inhabitants

What moves residents to separate their waste, and how do you get them to the next level? Diftar and reversed collecting are two good instruments. We also see good opportunities for rewarding people, to improve the quantity and especially the quality of the separated fractions. For various clients, we support and or co-design a remuneration plan including matching measures.

  • Wastes are commodities

Municipalities in the Netherlands have the ambition to help inhabitants produce less than 100 kilograms of residual waste and divide more than 75% of the waste into useful fractions. Innovaders has more than 20 years of project experience regarding waste and has product examples how to involve people and also on how to optimize the chain for reclaiming waste.

  • Improve the chain

Many cities are on the eve of introducing reversed collection and / or diftar. Innovaders has good experience in setting up a proper efficient collection system. Steps taken include:

    • Making insights clear: Innovaders has made a calculation tool for NVRD (Dutch Waste Association), which provides quick insight into the effects of reversed collection and diftar (shift waste, containerization, cost-benefit). See the project example below for a further description.
    • Compilation of a project plan in which the tasks and responsibilities are appointed including planning and costs of the project.
    • Technical equipment: current area and current containerization, new chain device with investment in district containers, minicontainers, monitoring and registration system.
    • Optimization of the logistics device: Container emptying frequency and the use of vehicles.
    • Setting up communication system towards inhabitants, including providing insight and options to reward.

We would like to contribute to a far-reaching waste separation. If you want to know what we can do for your city, please contact Gernout Erens by email or call +31 (0) 20 3868 702

NVRD calculation tool

For the NVRD (Dutch Association for Waste Collection), Innovaders has made a calculation model that allows municipalities and waste collectors to calculate the effects of diftar and reversed collecting in their district. The starting point is the experiences of all municipalities in the Netherlands who have already introduced diftar and / or reversed collecting.

The calculator proposes the number of containers needed to realize this waste shift. It gives clear insight. The financial part of the calculation tool looks at the change in waste management costs (container, collection and waste handling costs) and the results for lowering the waste tax.

Waste strategy for Tehran

Together with DHV consultancy, Innovaders has been working on a World Bank project to improve the entire waste chain in Tehran, the capital of Iran, a beautiful city with more than 12 million inhabitants.

Important was the introduction of a 3R waste strategy: Reduction, Re-use and Recycling. The project has looked at how separate waste collection system can be introduced within 10 years and how the citizens can be closely involved. In parallel, plans have been made to improve the composting and recycling industry with private parties.

The role of Innovaders was to propose operational improvements for the entire chain. First, it looked at how the waste chain now works and the possible problems. Various scenarios have been worked out, including the necessary equipment and personnel needed for this. It has also been considered which additional investments are required in composting and recycling plants and what the costs / benefits of this could be with the changing market prices.

Next, Innovaders has contributed to the implementation plan that has been drawn up with the client for the next 5 years.
